What (We do)

SugarStats is a web-based blood sugar tracker and diabetes management system built by diabetics for diabetics. SugarStats provides a simple, completely web-based and clean interface to track, monitor and access your glucose levels and diabetic statistics to spot dangerous trends and better manage your diabetic health.

You input and access your info via various method (web browser, mobile phone, email, twitter.com etc) for easy input and access no matter where you are. So whether at home, on the road or in the office, you’re connected.

With SugarStats you can track your blood sugar glucose levels along with the elements that effect those levels such as medication, food intake and physical activity. You can then easily share this information with your health care professional, family and friends to get further consultation, support and advice to better your health.

Why (We do what we do)

In its initial concept, SugarStats came out of a personal project to provide a centrally available, online and easy to use glucose tracking and diabetes management system. Online diabetes management is not a new concept, but we didn’t see satisfying solutions that really were welcoming to the end user—the diabetic using it everyday. We wanted to create something that was not only easy to use and effective, but something that people would WANT to use and that didn’t look like it was built for a medical professional to use.

So we built something that hopefully provides people feedback on their progress to motivate them to keep going and take better control of their diabetes. Something to let them interact better with their doctors, family and diabetic support teams. Something people can really use that doesn’t require them to be a medical expert or lug around a pen and paper log book wherever they go.

Who (We are)

We’re a small company based out of Hawaii of motivated and intense individuals. We love technology, the web and we love to see how it can help people improve their lives and health.

Based in the Aloha state of Hawaii, we have a distributed team spread across the planet from people in California to developers all the way in Australia. Each of us either has had experience with diabetes or manage it ourselves.

Marston Alfred – Founder & Chief Architect

Marston was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes over 15 years ago. He has always felt dissatisfied and uninspired with the various current ways to monitor and manage his diabetes, mainly finding them either overly complicated and involved or pedantic and ‘boring’. Marston’s has over a decade of Network Engineering, Web Application Design/Programming and Server Security experience.

Since 1999 his work experience has especially been focused on website design, usability and application programming using open-source technologies. Over the past 5 years Marston has been highly motivated to find a means that effectively and engagingly self-manages his diabetes utilizing cutting edge web technologies and utilizing current trends and new paradigms of Web 2.0.

When he’s not working on SugarStats, Marston loves to do photography, exercise, life-cast/blog, travel, Qi Gong, eat organic Raw Food and stay on top of all the amazing web tech and trends coming out.

Daerick Lanakila – CFO/President co-founder.

In marketing he directed his staff of 35+ to win top sales honors on over 15 occasions in competition with over 2,000 satellite offices around the world. His financial background includes serving as President of a financial company and 3 years as CFO overseeing foster care facilities.

He ran a 24/7 staff of 30+ employees, brought the company to $1 million a year plus in income in the second year, and increased the company’s revenues by 300% in three years. For 7 years he was CFO of a non-profit complimentary healing company.

Nedrra Lanakila – Exec. Vice President, CHRO (Chief Human Resources Officer), co-founder.

Nedrra has been in the complementary/alternative health field as practitioner, teacher, counselor, and inventor of healing modalities including fresh organic skin care products for over 20 years.
In private practice for her first 15 years she also served as CEO of an alternative healing foundation and founder of several other companies. Serving as adviser to the HR department of companies utilizes her ability to identify the core issue(s) that have created stagnancy or sabotage to her client’s stated goals, and provide alternatives (restructuring, training, coaching) to more deeply realign team and staff to a re-clarified focus.

Over a 10+ year journey, Nedrra experienced firsthand the stress, depression and debilitation that can occur when living with a chronic, life-altering disease and also with experiencing repeated life-threatening crisis due to illness. After less than 6 months of being a 100% Vegan Raw Foodist, Nedrra healed herself from over 85% of her symptoms. She is now approx. 96% free of all symptoms which includes a weight loss of 80+ pounds, critical hyper-tension (High blood pressure), stroke, painful, immobilizing chest pains, acid reflux, constant indigestion and extremely low energy levels.

Today, Nedrra continues to feel rejuvenated, delights in her new fitness & full mobility and in her newly realized levels of high, sustained energy and mental clarity. In her speaking and coaching engagements on prosperity, well being and empowerment, Nedrra encourages clients and audience members to explore vibrant raw foods as a conscious lifestyle choice to create a profound, significant shift in their quality of life.

As a very close-knit family they all have personally experienced the trials and tribulations of living with diabetes. Once Marston imagined and created the basic platform of SugarStats and envisioned its potential, Daerick and Nedrra also realized the great value of it, not only to the diabetic, but to the diabetic’s family as well—or, as is referred to more and more, to the “type 3 diabetic”.

United in their desire to make a difference in the quality of life of the diabetic and their families, they have grown SugarStats to a place where it now clearly demonstrates its potential to philanthropic, humanitarian, healthcare and business visionaries alike.

A message from Marston (aka “The Beginning”)

Marston here, the creator of SugarStats.com. I’ve been a Type-1 diabetic and “dealing” with it for over 15 years. Initially I came up with SugarStats to fill a void in the online diabetes management space as well as create a solution that better fit a more modern lifestyle. The solutions I came across before SugarStats were either in-accessible, not user-friendly or just not fun to use. Having done my fair share of web development I took on the project to create a potential solution and SugarStats was the result.

Networking with fellow diabetics I got a tremendous amount of feedback and interest in the project (I had only been using it in private: it didn’t even have a name!). I was amazed to received hundreds of emails from people still using pen & paper logs, excel spreadsheets or not tracking their diabetes statistics at all! At that point I decided to go at it full time, so SugarStats.com was born. This was almost 2 years ago and we’ve come such a long way. It truly has been a great journey and I can’t wait for tomorrow!
